Fake news, and its next of kin, mis-information and dis-information, are not new. They’ve been around since the dawn of creation (e.g., consider the creation story with the serpent telling Eve she wouldn’t die) and they were around in the years following Jesus’ death. John writes into a world where people are teaching things like (i) matter is evil and only the spirit is good (and so some argued it didn’t matter what you did in your physical body), (ii) Jesus’ physical body was not real but only seemed real, (iii) Jesus was not the Christ, (iv) etc. John tells the believers what these other teachers are saying is fake news - Jesus is real and believers do not make a practice of sinning. Through faith, every child of God overcomes the world. Believers should be encouraged because they can know now that they have eternal life and have fellowship with God through Jesus.
